Spark Troops offers special needs volunteer opportunities across New Jersey. Whether you are a high school student earning community service hours, a parent, or an adult with time and heart to give — there is a place in a troop for you.
Families
Enroll your child as a Trooper
Enrollment starts with a conversation, not a form. You tell us about your child — how they communicate, what they love, what a hard day looks like — and their availability, so we can plan the right troop for them.
Based on where you live, your child joins a troop of trained volunteers close to home. From there you stay in the loop through the platform: session schedules, reminders, attendance confirmations, and updates from your child’s troop.
A parent or guardian is present at every session — that consistent presence is part of what keeps the routine safe and steady. And you are never in it alone: troops build community for parents and families too, so you find connection with other families along the way.
High school volunteer opportunities
Volunteer with kids with disabilities
As a volunteer, you are the heart of every session. You join a troop and stick with it — playing, encouraging, and being the consistent face a Trooper looks for when they walk in the door.
Before your first session you complete safety and role training, so you arrive knowing what to do and who to ask. Every time you show up it counts — and you build real skills and lasting friendships along the way.
Every session you attend counts toward community service hours for high school. Troops meet close to home, so special needs volunteering fits around school, sports, and work instead of competing with them.
You don’t need experience with autism or other developmental disabilities. You need to show up, listen, and care. We’ll teach you the rest.
This registration is completed by a parent or guardian, not by the teen.
Adults
Lead a troop
Troop Leaders across New Jersey set the tone: they oversee logistics, mentor volunteers, and are the steady adult presence families rely on. You bring your experience — as a parent, educator, coach, or simply a committed adult — and we bring the training, the tools, and the team of volunteers around you.
Every Troop Leader completes a background check before serving. We say that plainly because it is a feature of trust, not a hurdle: families deserve to know exactly who stands beside their child. Leaders also get the full SparkTroops platform — scheduling, attendance, communication with families, and session planning in one place.

Become a Chapter Volunteer
Help Spark Troops grow in your community.
Chapter Volunteers help establish new troops, train and support Troop Leaders, promote Spark Troops in their region, and assist with outreach and fundraising activities. They also serve as an important connection between local Troop Leaders and Spark Troops leadership.
Chapter Volunteers support the program behind the scenes and do not work directly with participating children.
Your leadership can help bring Spark Troops to more families and communities.
